Getting these details right is what separates a fitted floor from a finished one — the right trim at a doorway or stairwell isn't just cosmetic, it's what stops boards from being damaged at the edges.

Choosing the Right Threshold

A threshold or edging does a specific job depending on its profile, so picking the right shape matters more than picking a colour match. A flat threshold joins two floors of the same height, typically at a doorway. A reducer threshold (R-section) creates a smooth ramp down between a new wood floor and a lower adjacent surface, such as carpet or vinyl — sized to the height difference (commonly 7mm or 15mm) between the two. T-shaped profiles fill the expansion gap between two areas of the same flooring at the same height, while L-shaped profiles are used where a floor meets a different surface at an external edge, such as against tiles.

Multifunctional systems like QuickStep's Incizo range cover several of these jobs — flat, reducer, T-shape and stair edge — from one profile with different sub-components, which can simplify sourcing when a job involves several transition types.

Scotia, Quadrant and Skirting

Scotia and quadrant beading are not the same shape, despite often being used for the same job. Scotia has a concave, curved profile; quadrant is a quarter-circle profile. Both sit at the join between the floor and the skirting board to hide the expansion gap, so the choice usually comes down to matching what's already fitted in a property rather than one being objectively better than the other.

Skirting boards themselves are typically supplied to match a specific flooring range — QuickStep's parquet and laminate skirting, for example, is designed to be used only with the corresponding QuickStep flooring so the colour and finish line up exactly.

Stair Nosings

Stair nosings protect the front edge of a stair tread, which takes far more repeated impact and wear than the rest of the floor. They're sized to the flooring thickness they're paired with — a nosing bought for a 15mm floor won't sit correctly with a 20mm one — so it's worth checking the board thickness before ordering rather than the length or finish alone. Brand-specific nosings, such as those designed for Kährs' Woodloc system, are built to click directly into that flooring range rather than needing a separate fixing method.

Corner Beads and Pipe Surrounds

Corner beads cover external and internal corners where boards meet at an angle, hiding rough edges and fixings, and are typically supplied unfinished so they can be stained to match the floor rather than sold pre-matched to every possible colour. Pipe surrounds (sometimes called pipe ferrules) do a similarly small but visible job — wrapping neatly around radiator pipes where they pass through the floor, sold in pairs and sized to the pipe diameter.

Matching Material and Finish

Most of these accessories are supplied unfinished as standard, which allows them to be stained and sealed to match the exact floor they're being fitted alongside, rather than relying on a pre-finished colour that may not be an exact match. Where a pre-finished option is available — lacquered or oiled to match a specific flooring range — it's usually tied to that brand's own flooring rather than a universal match, so it's worth checking compatibility before ordering.

Common Questions About Flooring Accessories

What's the difference between a flat threshold and a reducer threshold?
A flat threshold joins two floors of the same height. A reducer threshold slopes down to bridge a height difference between a wood floor and a lower surface like carpet or vinyl, and is sized to the specific gap being covered.

Is scotia beading the same as quadrant beading?
No — scotia has a concave, curved profile, while quadrant is a quarter-circle shape. Both cover the expansion gap between floor and skirting, so the choice is usually about matching existing trim rather than performance.

Why are stair nosings sized to the flooring thickness?
A nosing needs to sit flush with the floor level for a safe, even step edge. One sized for a different board thickness will sit proud or recessed, so it's worth confirming your floor's thickness before ordering.

Should I buy unfinished or pre-finished accessories?
Unfinished accessories can be stained and sealed to match your exact floor colour, which is often more reliable than a pre-finished option unless that finish is specifically designed to match the flooring range you've fitted.
