Not all lacquers are built for the same job, and picking the wrong grade for the amount of traffic a floor gets is one of the most common reasons a finish wears through faster than expected.

One-Component vs Two-Component Lacquers

One-component (1K) lacquers, such as Bona Mega or Junckers MT200, are ready to use straight from the tin and cure through exposure to air, giving much of the toughness of a two-component product without needing to mix a separate hardener. Two-component (2K) lacquers, like Bona Traffic HD or Junckers HT700, are mixed with a catalyst before application and generally cure to a harder, more chemical-resistant film — the trade-off is a limited working time once mixed and a need to use the full batch within that window.

For most domestic floors, a one-component lacquer offers a good balance of durability and ease of application. Two-component lacquers tend to be specified where the floor sees heavier or more demanding use — commercial premises, rental properties, or areas exposed to spills and chemicals.

Matching the Lacquer to How the Floor Is Used

Lacquers in this range aren't one-size-fits-all. Junckers' HP800 Sport range and Bona's Traffic HD are built for sports halls and very high-traffic commercial floors, where the manufacturer states Traffic HD allows normal foot traffic again within around 12 hours of application — useful where downtime has to be kept short. Junckers Friction Floor Lacquer is a slip-resistant formulation specifically aimed at spaces like restaurants and bars, where grip underfoot matters as much as durability.

At the other end, Morrells' Induro range includes an anti-bacterial water-based varnish suited to areas where hygiene is a specific concern, alongside a general-purpose sealer designed as a base coat under Induro lacquers on stripped or refurbished floors.

Aerosol and Touch-Up Lacquers

For small repairs or spot touch-ups, aerosol lacquers such as Morrells' 400ml cans let you refresh a small area or blend a repair into an existing satin, satin-matt or matt finish without opening a full 5L can — useful for skirting edges, small scuffs, or matching in after a localised repair.

Additives for Application Conditions

Getting a lacquer to level and dry evenly isn't only about the product itself — room conditions matter too. Bona Retarder is added to waterborne primers and lacquers to slow drying and improve levelling when the room is warm or the air is dry, reducing the risk of the finish drying too fast and leaving visible lap marks or brush strokes.

Common Questions About Floor Lacquers

Should I choose a one-component or two-component lacquer?
A one-component lacquer suits most domestic floors and is simpler to apply, since there's no mixing or working-time limit. A two-component lacquer generally cures harder and is better suited to commercial premises or floors under heavier use, but needs to be mixed and used within its working time.

What's the difference between the sheen options?
This is largely down to appearance rather than durability — gloss shows the most reflection and highlights grain, while matt and extra matt sheens hide dust, footprints and minor wear more effectively day to day.

Can I use a domestic lacquer on a commercial floor?
It's not recommended for anything beyond very light commercial use. Commercial and sports-specific lacquers are formulated for far higher foot traffic and are usually two-component for extra durability, so a domestic product is likely to wear through faster than expected under heavy use.

Do I need a sealer before applying lacquer?
On a stripped or newly sanded floor, a sealer or base coat, such as Morrells' Induro sealer, is often used first to prepare the surface and give the topcoat an even base — check the specific lacquer's application instructions, as not all lacquers require a separate sealer.
